Funnily enough the most useful thing an architect can do to get traffic to their website is to claim their business on Google Places. This is because people search for an architect in their local area.

Next thing they know, they're clicking on the site and waiting form the flash to load...25%, 28%, 34%... Right. Forget them, where's the next architect in Surbiton?

Having trained as an architect myself, I understand the attraction. Architects like their websites to reflect their personality and by nature are not text based people. Before flash it was huge image sizes, remember that? Same problem.

The internet is a text based medium, when it comes to search. So start with the text and add to that. Images need text so they can be found, video needs captioning. One great picture targeted at your ideal client will keep them clicking when they left the flash site in 10 seconds.

Proud to be your friend Babs!

a big YESSSSS to this one! Couldn't agree more.

Even bigger pet peeve is (usually sensible!) twitter contacts sending out links to interesting-sounding articles which have actually been auto generated by the dreaded SEO-bot. I wish there was some way of publicly blacklisting any site that does this, so none of us have to waste time loading them ever again!

No, no and thrice no to the pop up boxes that glide across your screen! It's the quickest way to make me exit the page in question.

Hi Lynn
I should have noted what I show in the screencast. When logged in, go to the Classic Home link - top right next to your account name. That brings up the original Google page and from that you can "Instant".

Hi Babs - very interesting and very distracting! I had a play and have not got Google Instant even when logged on! Am I doing something wrong?
Actually - don't answer that. I still don't understand how intuitive it all is.
BFN - Lynn

Interesting thoughts Babs. Being a person that designs email for targetted campaigns , I subscribes to peoples newsletters for fun just so I can marvel in how poor people attempt this, I quite love what you write - and yes...

...most of the news is drivel, pointless, boring, not newsworthy and some people would do better not to send anything. Policy behind using email for marketing is something people just never seek advice about. It is a shame as we always do pre-sales consultation before agreeing any order.

As the owner of a design firm that churns out branded email and as a company that designs targetted email to specific user groups, I find it great that the market is awash with such poor excuses for email marketing.

We've never marketed ourselves by email, other than our regular daily email - funnily enough we advertise - but maybe just maybe we will install a few email processes for ourselves one day.
